Because of many financial woes, I have to go back to work. Do I have to report my income to Social Security? We aren’t on disability or SSI just regular Social Security. How do I report it? Just call?

Thanks a,

Barb’s ? super important.
if you took SS before FRA, you will get penalized $1 for every $2 over 17k. But if you took SS after FRA, there’s no penalty.

if you work a traditional job with FICA taken out, SSA will know & will calculate if there’s a penalty.

Thanks! I took SS before FRA. This job is part time and I won’t be making anywhere near $17,000 so I shouldn’t be penalized. I just want to make sure I’m doing all I need to do.

If you start collecting before 66 than u are limited to 17k (when my husband retired 9yrs ago it was 14.4k) If after 66 (for husband was 66 and 2 months) you get to make as much as you want. Believe me, you don't have to tell them, they know.

My husband worked for GM. When he retired he got 20k up front and 25k in a voucher for a car. He retired end of 2009. The voucher was good for 18 months. He chose to use it in 2010. The voucher came like a check with taxes and SS taken. We got 15k. The end of the year we got a letter telling us we needed to pay because husband went over the 14k. Thank God I kept the check stub that the check was for a voucher given at time of retirement. Never heard from them so I guess it was excepted.

My understanding is that once you reach FRA, you are not penalized by SS.
