My husband was in the army for a few years and he died March 30,2015. His sister came from Florida and took all his stuff from his house. She stoled everything by telling people that me and her half brother were divorced which was a big lie. She wanted extra copies of his death certificates for what reasons I don't know. But she cleaned out his whole apartment and took everything back to Florida where she lives and hauled everything away in a U-Haul that she rented because shes money hungary but the most important thing of all that she left behind was my husbands ashes at the funeral home. She hurried up and had him cremated so of course I had to hire an attorney which are expensive because shes in trouble for doing all this shady crap..He had a will in his apartment in a lock box and she gave the caretaker permission to open it and he always told me that I was to open it only after he passed away because me and my husband were still married but separated about four years ago.So there's a big blow up with his half sister and the funeral director and the people who manage the high rise apartments where he lived because after my husbands death the manager at the apartments left certain people go inside his place to rummage thru all of his things so there's a lot of people who are in big trouble here. But heres my main concern I do NOT have the money to get my husbands back from the funeral director and being he served in the army is it possible for the VA to help me somehow to get his ashes back to me? His half sister took everything worth while out of his apartment but left his ashes behind.Does this make any sense? It sure doesn't to me.But any way I truly need some information on what to do next about getting Glenns ashes out of the funeral home and to grant him his wish of having his ashes scattered into the wind up over the mountains by Maryland because he was from the beautiful area of Deep Creek Maryland and his sister couldn't even honor his dying last wish..So Im pleading with somebody to steer me in the right direction on how to apply for help with the VA to help me out a little so I can at least get his ashes out of the funeral home because I'm on SSI and I just don't have the money to do it by myself..Thank you all..

Go to the funeral home with your marriage license in your pocket and ask for his ashes. They may not charge you...?

Who paid for the funeral? Did he have life insurance?

As I see it, you are still next of kin. Call the funeral home and see what is owed.
