County social services should be able to do a welfare check and then get things in motion. That is one of the reasons they exist.

But nins has a point - if they are "just sane enough," sometime SS can't do anything and either can you. It's heartbreaking, but if they are mentally capable and don't want help, it gets much harder to control. Please keep us posted.

I understand and sympathize. My Mother is similar and I'm living in this dump with her. She has money, and I quit my job to help her out and am now living on food stamps. Does your Mother live alone? Your County Adult Protective Services can help if she is "self-abusing"-mine is just sane enough so they can't do anything.

You might want to contact your local Dept. of Aging and Disabilities - they usually have a list of elder care attorneys. Also, many states have legal aid programs that specifically help people with these kinds of issues.
